After graduating from High School, Tom decided to venture west. He attended The University of Dayton in Ohio.

He secured paralegal positions with large corporate law firms in New York and in Boston. Tom began his post-degree legal work as a trial attorney in Colorado Springs. He served faithfully for eight years as a Colorado State Public Defender, trying countless cases ranging from misdemeanors to complex felonies including homicides and achieving significant success.
